Extreme Weather Protocol

The weather was dire last night so I checked the forecast and it was predicting 4h of rain at the end of the ride to cousin #4. If touring I would cycle for half a day but that is not really an option so I bought a rail ticket… £10 more than crossing the Solent to travel from Portsmouth to Newport by train.

Bella

I waved goodbye to my excellent cousin Bella and headed to Ryde. She had given me a lovely little route along the coast path that I wish I had known yesterday – flatter than the way I had gone and you could obviously sea the sea! I have had severe wobble on the steering with one hand and as a physics teacher had hypothesised that a disparate load between the two mini-paniers would give a perfect regular but tiny force to the bike – enough to set up resonance. I tried to make them more even in weight and the ride was WAY better. Physics for the win!

Catamaran – I wouldn’t fancy that bike rack as designed with a loaded bike!

I was perfectly in time for the Cat, picked up my tickets with my code and the VERY helpful SWR guard’s credit card, hopped on the train and have 2h to London then the train home after a short ride across London.

I expected it to be sunny all day but I am just at Petersfield and it is already raining.

  1. The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain, so you should be OK once you get there!
